Gustavo González is a graduate teacher from I.S.F.D. N° 5 in Pergamino. He moved to Buenos Aires six years ago and has been teaching English in companies ever since. He has been in the ESL field since 1993, working as a teacher, school coordinator, and teacher trainer. Presenter at national and international conferences such as FAAPI 2001, 2003 and 2005, the 5th and 7th ESOL Southern Cone Regional Convention, APIBA SIGs Symposium 2003 and 2005 and APIBA Annual Seminar 2003 and 2004. He is an oral assessor for the ECL exams. He has lectured on various occasions on American English, idioms, informal language, teaching Business English and using songs and movies in the classroom. He is the current Vice President of APIBA (Asociación de Profesores de Inglés de Buenos Aires).

GRAMMAR I

CLAUSE: it’s a group of words with a subject and a predicate of its own; it hasn’t meaning by itself.
COMPLEX SENTENCE: it’s a main clause and a subordinate clause – a complex sentence may have 1, 2 o more subordinate clauses.

Examples:

1. We bought a large house. Adjectival Clause
2. We bought a house [that would be large enogh for conversion into flats].
3. Your speech gave everyone great pleasure.
4. [What you said] gave everyone great pleasure. Subject. Noun Clause.
5. I shall see you tomorrow.
6. I shall see you [when I return from my holiday]. Adverbial Clause.

The work of a noun, adjective an adverb may be done:

by a single word
by a group of words (finite or a non-finite clause)

NON-FINITE FORMS OF THE VERB

INFINITIVE
GERUND
PRESENT PARTICIPLE
PAST PARTICIPLE
PERFECT PARTICIPLE

I have something [to tell you]. Non-finite adjectival clause.
[To give up at this stage] would be a great pity. Non-finite noun clause.
[To speed up the delivery of letters], the post office introduced automatic sorting. Non-finite adverbial clause.
[Closing the factory] would be unemployment for many of the town’s work force. Non-finite gerundial noun clause.
The thieves took two mail bags [containing registered letters]. Non-finite adjectival clause.
I couldn’t understand the instructions [given in the manual]. Non-finite adjectival clause.
[Given time], he will make a first class tennis player. = If he’s given time, he will make a first class tennis player. Non-finite adverbial clause of condition.
[Having received their final medical check], astronauts boarded their spacecraft. Non-finite adverbial clause of time. =After receiving object of a preposition.

WHEN WE HAVE MORE THAN ONE MAIN CLAUSE JOINED BY “AND” WE HAVE COORDINATED CLAUSES (CLAUSES OF EQUAL RANK):

The station master waved his free flag and the train started moving.

The difference between the PRESENT PARTICIPLE and the GERUND (ING)

As MODIFIERS:

running stream PRESENT PARTICIPLE: it’s the stream that runs.
running-shoes GERUND: shoes for running. You can also say: sports shoes.

Everything used after a perposition is a noun or a noun equivalent

PRESENT PARTICIPLE
ü It is expanded into an adjectival clause. BOILING ‘WATER
ü The stress is on the noun. HARD WORKING ‘STUDENTS

GERUND
ü The stress is on the “ing” form. ‘ WORKING-CLOTHES
ü We use a typhon. ‘CHANGING-ROOM.

His views on politics were rather [surprising]. Subject Complement.
He seems quite [satisfied] with his new job. Subject Complement.
Her latest craze is [dancing]. Subject Complement. Gerund
His hobby is [collecting stamps]. Subject Complement. Present participle.
His sister is collecting stamps. Finite verb.

THAT CLAUSES

[Reading] is his favourite pastime. Subject. GERUND.
[To ease credit restrictions at this stage] would be unease. Subject.
My worst vice is [smoking]. Subject Complement. GERUND.
Her first impulse was [to scream]. Subject Complement.

TO: is also a preposition, not only an infintive maker.

GERUND and INFINITIVE are NOUNS. They perform these functions in the sentence:
OF THE VERB BE

SUBJECT
DIRECT OBJECT of TRANSITIVE VERBS
SUBJECT COMPLEMENT

Only the gerund:
Ø is modified by an adjective or an adverb
Ø is used after a preposition.
Ø can be used with an article (with a determiner)
Ø may be qualified by an adjective (with a determiner)

He insisted on coming. V+PREPOSITION+GERUND: Object of a prepositional verb.

This book makes good light reading. We cannot use the infinitive.
Those/The findings of the Court have now being made public.
I can’t keep track of his comings and goings. The GERUND admits plural form.

The GERUND is used AFTER:

ü PREPOSITION
ü PREPOSITIONAL VERB
ü PHRASAL VERB

TEMPORADA DE EXÁMENES

Y sí, como bien ya todos sabemos, este jueves es la fecha del parcial de Fonètica y Fonología, y si bien no hemos recibido una confirmación por parte de la profesora sobre los temas que irán incluídos en el examen, podemos quedarnos tranquilos puesto que el tema ya fue discutido en clase...sabemos entonces que dentro de todo lo que se evaluará, hay que recordar elegir cinco Tongue Twisters, que tendremos que leer de corrido, además no hay que olvidarse del Sonnet 18....

Es casi seguro que la mayoría de ustedes no lo tenga, por eso me he tomado la libertad de incluirlo a continuación, con su correspondiente traducción para eliminar toda duda, y recuerden que de aquellas palabras que no conozcamos, tenemos que elaborar una ficha en donde constará la pronunciación (transcripción fonética), el significado (todas las distintas asepciones del diccionario), la información importante (countable, uncountable; transitive, untransitive), y los ejemplos necesarios.

Suerte en el examen.

PD: Y como no puedo con mi caracter, además el soneto me puede, les incluyo una imagen relativamente alusiva...para graficar.

Hola una vez más, es preciso informarles que la profesora Ethel Revelo, de "Fonética y Fonología" y "Gramática" nos ha dejado información referente a los exámenes que se acercan, dicha información está en los comentarios, pero para facilitar su lectura aún más (como si no fuera lo suficientemente sencillo) y porque no queremos que nadie se quede sin enterarse aquí la transcribimos:

Y acà estamos una vez más sin muchas novedades pero con la alegría de tener la posibilidad de ofrecerles algunos vínculos más que interesantes relacionados con el estudio de la lengua inglesa. Sean ustedes bienvenidos una vez más a nuestro blog, tenemos buenas noticias, como el título presagia; desmintiendo una versión que comenzó a circular de manera mucho más oficial de lo que nos gustaría reconocer, la carrera de "Profesorado de Inglés" seguirá firme el año entrante, por lo tanto aquellos interesados tendrán la oportunidad de comenzar este camino ni bien las inscripciones estén abiertas, hecho del cual les estaremos informando a su debido tiempo. Tengan en mente entonces que las oportunidades se siguen brindando, y nosotros estamos esperando engrosar nuetras filas cuanto antes.

Sean todos ustedes bienvenidos al primer webblog del Profesorado de Inglés existente desde 2005, en la "Escuela Normal Superior Villa del Totoral". Dicha carrera consta de cuatro años de instrucción. Los encargados de este sitio somos los alumnos de la tercera generación de estudiantes, actualmente cursando el pimer año. Próximamente les acercaremos más información sobre la carrera, las asignaturas, los horarios y toda la información relativa.
